Best Reasons To Visit Sri Lanka & Festivals In Sri Lanka

Dalada Perahera

Kandy Esala Perahera

Kandy Esala Perahera is a renowned Buddhist festival in Kandy, Sri Lanka, celebrated annually in July or August. The festival is a grand procession that showcases Sri Lankan culture, traditions, and spirituality, featuring adorned elephants, traditional Kandyan dancers, drummers, fire dancers, and various religious representations. The procession attracts thousands of spectators worldwide.

The sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, housed in the Temple of the Tooth, is at the center of the procession, paraded through Kandy's streets in a golden casket atop a lavishly decorated elephant. This festival not only celebrates Buddhism but also showcases the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. Devotees express their devotion and seek blessings, while tourists and visitors witness an awe-inspiring fusion of religion, art, and tradition.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya, also known as ‘Lion Rock’, is particularly notable for the fortress built into its walls and plateau. Colorful frescoes adorn the walls while two giant lion paws guard the main gateway. Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. Visitors can climb the 1,200 steps – many of which are bolted onto the rockface – to explore one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning. Rising dramatically from the central plains, the enigmatic rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka's single most dramatic sight. Near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that contains the ruins of an ancient civilization, thought to be once the epicenter of the short-lived kingdom of Kassapa, and there are spellbinding vistas across mist-wrapped forests in the early morning. A royal invitation to explore a majestic 5th century fortress in the sky, the most visited historical sites in the country. This gigantic column of rock, rising up 200 meters (660ft) into the heavens was once a royal palace.
